OutRunners glitches?

When I play the Japanese version of Outrunners I seem to have issues with the sound — the track change button always causes it to switch to Jingle Bells for some reason. The last two times I've tried playing the US version, not only do I have this problem, for some reason the game has a bug where the CPU player causes the game to pause.

Is this something that earlier versions of the emulator don't have issues with? I'm seeing lots of videos of the game, presumably recorded via Fusion, and none of them have these problems. So if someone could help me figure out how to get it working, it'd be much appreciated.
